The Third ISA Forum will be convened in Vienna, Austria, 10-14 July 2016 on the theme “The Futures We Want: Global Sociology and the Struggles for a Better World.” This theme encourages a forward-orientation in empirical, theoretical, and normative research to tackle the problems and opportunities that often cut across borders.

The first conclusions of SSF's meeting in New York / Primeras conclusiones del encuentro de SSF en Nueva York

" SSF's meeting that took place during ASA'S congress in New York ratified the aims of our organization and, especially, the defense of the human rights in depressed zones, which are the principal victim of the crisis ".


"La reunión de SSF que tuvo lugar durante el congreso de ASA en Nueva York ratificó los objetivos de nuestra organización y, en particular, la defensa de los derechos humanos en zonas deprimidas, que son la principal víctima de la crisis".

Entre otros temas, se discutieron en el encuentro de las cuestiones más debatidas en los últimos años, el papel de los Sindicatos. Estos eran fuertes en los años posteriores a la Segunda Guerra Mundial pero desde el mandato de Reagan fueron postergados y se premió a los Estados donde no había negociación colectiva. Esto quiere decir que las empresas prefieren instalarse en Florida o en Nevada que en Nueva York o Nueva Jersey. Puede decirse que la expansión económica americana se está produciendo más en el Sur y en el Medio Oeste que en el Este y esta es una tendencia sostenida.

Con la globalización mucho capital americano elige instalarse en América Latina o el Sur de Asia y si a ello añadimos la persistente importancia de los paraísos fiscales nos encontramos con una nueva forma de capitalismo más radical y menos controlado. En estos momentos el gran tema para América es China y ahí es donde se producirá la tendencia para el inmediato futuro. Estamos a las puertas de un economía deslocalizada cuyos peligros más graves son la posición subordinada de los trabajadores y la reducción de los recursos fiscales con los que los gobiernos mantenían un estado de bien estar que está en peligro.

Pero el Estado bienestar en Estados Unidos siempre ha tenido agujeros negros y, entre ellos destaca que más de cuarenta millones de americanos no tienen derecho a la atención sanitaria por estar este derecho condicionado al respectivo contrato laboral. En Estados Unidos no hay una seguridad social como en Europa y el partido republicano se esfuerza en que no la haya nunca. De hecho, la actual situación de suspensión del Estado americano, la no aprobación por los republicanos del presupuesto federal, se debe a esa obsesión de la derecha por impedir que los americanos tengan asistencia sanitaria con independencia de su situación laboral. La atención sanitaria americana está en manos de las compañías de seguros y el presidente Obama ha promulgado una ley para obligar a las compañías a aceptar a todos los que pidan estar asegurados y el Estado les ayudará económicamente si no tienen dinero para ello. 

Es la famosa ley conocida como “Obamacare”, que ha infuriado a los conservadores partidarios de que las compañías de seguros tengan grandes beneficios con motivo del seguro de salud que ellas pueden manipular no aceptando, por ejemplo, pacientes mayores o enfermos quienes supuestamente producen mayores gastos. 

Es, en el fondo, la defensa de un capitalismo rancio y agresivo que no tolera que haya un mínimo de derechos humanos que sea asequible a todos con independencia de su situación económica. En ese sentido y algunos otros, como la aceptación de la pena de muerte o la libertad para poseer armas de fuego Estados Unidos se separa de las democracias occidentales y se incorpora a ese grupo de países asiáticos y árabes que tienen muy poco respeto por los derechos humanos. Muchos españoles tienen una gran admiración por los Estados Unidos pero deberían tener en cuenta esas circunstancias y entender que, como europeos, pertenecemos a un espacio más progresista.
